Diagnosis: Pre-Diabetic

Every year or so my doctor orders a set of blood tests. Because I lack a gall bladder and try to maintain a low-fat diet, he's cautioned me that at some point I may become diabetic if I'm not careful. Some of the blood tests he has run are to check for diabetes.

A few days ago, I got the results in the mail with his annotations. There was nothing really definitive in what he said, no certain diagnosis. I tried my best to make sense of all the numbers and figure out what, if anything, might be wrong.

Dan reminded me that I'm not a doctor and that my fears could be unfounded, and as any good boyfriend\partner would do he assured me I'd be alright. Unfortunately, all my suspicions were confirmed today.

With high cholesterol and an impaired glucose tollerance, I'm at high risk for diabetes, pre-diabetic if you will. So my doctor wants me to attend a "Diabetic Teaching Class" at the hospital to learn about diabetes and how to alter my diet in order to lower my cholesterol and hopefully prevent diabetes.

If in 3 months my test results do not improve we'll look towards medicinal treatment for the cholesterol.

The first available class is not until June 21st. So I'll be doing research of my own in the meantime. The classes are 2 hours each, over the course of 4 weeks. (I'd rather do it over a period of 4 days!)

By the time I have all the knowledge behind me from the class, 2 months will have passed, leaving only 1 month of putting all I've learned to use before I'm due to test again. I'm not pleased about this and will have to figure out things sooner on my own.

I'll probably be blogging more about my health than anything else in the coming months. My apologies to those of you who read it for Dreamweaver and web development related posts. I'll try to toss a few things in here for you when I can.

I'm going to look into filtering the new Health category off my home page, so that only those who want to know how that's going can check. So if this post magically disappears from the main page, try the health category. (Hopefully I can get to this soon, but if not... its the thought that counts, right?)

One-Size-Fits-All Solutions

"This is where most people fail in my opinion...they believe that by purchasing a boxed solution they will not have to learn how to do basic programming! That is they believe this until they actually have the boxed solution installed than find out that everything from their own ISP's configurations to cross browser problems has an effect on their 100% plug and pray solution."~Redmanz

Turning 30 on the 30th

In less than 2 weeks, May 30th to be exact, I'll be turning 30 years old. I don't know that I really see it as the milestone that most people do and I'm not up in arms about it either. Perhaps in 10 years when I turn 40 it will feel that way.

Turning 30 just hasn't been a big deal for me. In fact, I can't even figure out how I'd like to celebrate it (if at all)...

So why am I even blogging about it? Well heck it is my birthday we're talking about and I guess I'd like to do something special for it (but not just because it is a "milestone"). I just can't think of what that might be and I figured if I blog about it perhaps some of you reading this might leave a comment with some suggestions.

My birthday falls on Memorial Day (Observed) this year. (Trivia: May 30th is always Memorial Day, but it is celebrated on the last Monday of the month which is technically Memorial Day Observed.) Mondays aren't exactly a "party" night around here, so please keep that in mind when making any suggestions. Thanks!

Long over due Birthday Blogging...

On April 20th my son turned 5 years old and my mom turned a year older than she was last year. (I know how old, but she'd probably prefer I don't announce it.)

The theme for Gaetano's birthday was The Incredibles. All of us wore paper Incredibles masks to dinner at Bucca D'Beppo. One of the waiters was a big fan of the film and looked like he could be Frozone. As he walked by our table he impersonated Frozone by shouting, "Honey, where is my super suite? Where is my super suit!?" We all cracked up laughing; it was great. So of course we gave him a mask to wear too. Two other servers also wore the masks.

Since Gaetano and my mom share a birthday they also shared the birthday cake I made for them with The Incredibles figurines as decoration. It had Frozone sliding in on some ice that was made of icing and rock candy, which Gaetano just loved.

Gaetano got a really cool Blue 16" Sting Ray bicycle, airplanes and a bunch of other cool gifts. I'm sure this will be a birthday party he never forgets.

Keep an eye on this post for an update... I'll be posting pictures in the coming week.

Amazing Generosity

In a desperate search for a cereal without any potassium (due to my allergy of it), I have recently discovered All Newman's Own Wild Blueberry Pecan cereal. (I would provide a direct link to the exact product but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be on their website and neither does Costo's site which is where I purchased the cereal.)

Since it is all natural that means Gaetano can have it too because there are no artificial colors. For me that's a double win.

So what's this got to do wiht generosity? Well, I was reading the side of the box and it says, "Paul Newman, as sole owner of Newman's Own, donates all his profitss and royalties after taxes for educational and charitable purposes." Wow... His website says that he's donated over 150 million dollars since 1982.

Mr. Newman has given me a reason beyond our allergies to try his products. I'll be buying more of this cereal for certain and trying out more All Natural Newman's Own brand products for sure.

I wish I'd found this cereal sooner! (I've been searching for over a year now.) Hopefully the rest of his products are as tasty and healthy...

If you know of any of his products that are especially good (low fat, and potassium free are preferable) please feel free to post a comment or send me an email. Thanks!
