Its vs. It's

I've always been confused about when to use "it's" and when to use "its". Finally, I've figured out that it's backwards. Usually an apostrophe then the letter s ('s) means possesion. No, not in the case of the word it. It's means it is or it has. When there is possesion involved like "on its side", there is no apostrophe. I figured I'd post this because I'm probably not the only one who's confused this. Oh no... now I am going to have to think about who's vs. whose. I'm pretty sure I use that correctly, and the same lack of apostrophe applies for possesiveness. I'm trying to improve my grammar, but thank goodness for copy editors. :-)
